Ryder Cup - Affiliation
The only course in Cheshire where you could once accumulate Ryder Cup points, and to have been played by 6 former Ryder Cup Captains.
Tony Jacklin leads the roll of honour, followed by Bernard Gallacher, Bernard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Sam Torrance and Nick Faldo.
Only two of them could claim to have completely mastered the course: Gallacher, who won the last Greater Manchester Open in 1981, and Faldo, who triumphed in the Martini two years later when he beat Jose-Maria Canizares in a sudden-death play-off at the 18th. BBC TV captured the drama on its Sunday afternoon Grandstand programme, with Peter Alliss commentating.
In 1985, Faldo, Canizares and seven others who had contested the Martini at Wilmslow helped Europe win the Ryder Cup for the first time in 28 years, under the inspired leadership of Tony Jacklin.
The Ryder Cup itself made a surprise appearance at Wilmslow Golf Club during an after-dinner speech by PGA Chief Executive Sandy Jones in 2005.
The fans who walked the Wilmslow fairways in those days were also privileged to see some great rounds from future Open Champions like the relatively unknown Greg Norman, who was cutting his teeth in Europe before finding fame and fortune in the USA, and the popular young Scotsman Sandy Lyle.
